Summer Team Projects
In Summer 2007 PedraViva sent a small team to Brazil at Nilce's invitation to work with her school in Belo Horizonte. Five girls (aged 16 to 22) along with Ted and Margi Steiner, Danielle O'Halloran and 4 Brazilian young people from Recife and Brasilia were involved in the summer project. The girls all had interests in music, dance and drama and quickly came together as a team, helping each other fundraise and prepare items like songs, dances and drama to take with them. They began Portuguese lessons with Neuza, and each raised £1500 to cover their own costs and to make a gift to the work in Brazil.
Fundraising events for the summer project included a Brazilian food evening, ‘Song for Brazil’ (a music evening with Mansfield Male Voice Choir), a barn dance, a sponsored toddle and a fun run, a sponsored bike ride and a talent show.
The summer project was very productive and rewarding and gave PedraViva unique opportunities for networking with officials and churches. Gift Aid reclaimed from the summer project fundraising has paid for a young person from the Recife school, Juninho, to work as a volunteer carer at the Sião orphange for a year.
In February 2008 a Sheffield film producer, Jeremy Thornton, approached PedraViva to ask if he could make a short film of Project Siao when he visited his daughter in Brasilia; we gladly accepted and the results are very pleasing! The 10-minute film is now used in talks given to churches and groups wanting to know more about the work of PedraViva and is available for use in your Church or group if you wish.
