Siao

We have continued to support this project financially since Danielle O’Halloran returned to Australia with her husband Samyr. Sião cares for children who have been abandoned or who are unable to live at home due to family problems.  The project currently accommodates several boys, and is working towards becoming self-sufficient with a plantation project. The money Pedraviva sends goes on salaries for the small staff team who all help to look after the children in various ways

Water tower now in use at Siao.

In February 2009 Danielle and Samyr will be moving from Brasil to Australia, at which time a local Church will be taking over at Siao.

Siao tree plantation

As part of our support for this work, we’ve started a carbon-offset scheme at Project Siao, planting trees for £12 each. This will pay for workers as well as improving the area, supporting the orphanage, teaching skills to a teenage school-leaver, replanting depleted rain- forest and helping to reduce further environmental damage!

 JANUARY 2009 News from Siao:

There will be a completely new group of people running Siao. They are from an Assemblies of God Church based in Plano Piloto, Brasilia. Pastor Andre, and his vice-president Herbert have years of experience in working in social projects are very enthusiastic about SIAO and have big plans for it, beginning by officially registering workers rather than using volunteers; this is a big step and will make a massive difference the functioning of the team. They have offered Brasil a good salary to stay on; he would have long term financial security and access to state benefits, and could rent a small place outside SIAO.

Begining Planation Work.  They have contacts in certain organisations which will make it easier to get various documents, eg to confirm that SIAO owns the land which may lead to getting funding from the government or benefit the boys in their health care.

They plan to continue the plantation project and to start sewing classes for woman in the community. The Church is giving extra money towards purchasing the minibus, as they want to buy a new one rather then a second hand one.

The other volunteers: Juninho has also completed his year and is sad to be leaving, but excited about his futureand his marriage to Priscilla later this year. Janicleidi is starting her University Social Work course on 6th February; Juliana is applying for a job which will pay a very good salary. She, Jani and their dad Ivanildo

all want to continue helping with SIAO as well.
